Tourism Climate Index (TCI) Analysis

District-level climate comfort maps, seasonal suitability projections, and destination-based vulnerability assessment. From the current period through 2100.

WHAT IS TCI

Scientific Tourism Climate Comfort Analysis

Tourism Climate Index (TCI) Methodology

The Tourism Climate Index (TCI), developed by Mieczkowski (1985), is a scientific index that scores touristic comfort conditions through climate variables. CIRRUS integrates current IPCC scenarios and high-resolution regional climate models into this methodology to produce analyses covering the 1996–2100 period for Turkey's tourism destinations.

The project carried out for the T.C. Ministry of Culture and Tourism in Çanakkale, Mersin, and Kayseri provinces is the first comprehensive application of this methodology at the scale of Turkey.

TCI COMPONENTS
Thermal Comfort (CID) 40%
Precipitation (R) 20%
Sunshine (S) 20%
Wind (W) 20%
CURRENT PERIOD
1996 – 2020

TCI maps calibrated with observational data. Seasonal comfort analysis and destination profile.

NEAR FUTURE
2050 – 2074

Medium-term projection. The period when seasonal shifts begin and adaptation measures become critical.

FAR FUTURE
2075 – 2100

Long-term projection. An end-of-century scenario in which the destination's climate suitability changes fundamentally.

🗺️
District-Level TCI Maps

Tourism climate index maps visualizing TCI scores for each district of the destination on color-coded maps. Seasonal vulnerability profile.

📅
Seasonal Suitability Analysis

Periodic comparison of tourism comfort across summer/winter seasons. Projections of high- and low-season shifts.

🛡️
Adaptation Action Plan

Destination-based adaptation strategies and infrastructure recommendations based on TCI findings. Concrete action recommendations for decision-makers.

T.C. Ministry of Culture and Tourism — Tourism Climate Analysis (2024)

District-level climate comfort mapping, seasonal vulnerability assessment, and a destination-based adaptation action plan were prepared for selected tourism destinations in Turkey using the TCI methodology. Covering both the current period and long-term projection studies, this analysis is the first comprehensive application of the TCI methodology at the public-institution scale in Turkey. You can access the vulnerability and risk analysis report here, and the tourism climate index and climate suitability assessment report here. You can access the IPCC's latest reports on the international scenarios used in tourism climate risk modeling here.
